Overcoming Adversity: Specialist Sydney Kent’s Journey through the Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness Program

In August 2023, Specialist Sydney Kent began her rehabilitation journey with the U.S. Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) program at the 82nd Airborne Division Sustainment Brigade. After suffering a shattered left femur in an airborne-training accident, Kent found herself in a frustrating situation where she was unable to perform her regular duties as a 92W Water Treatment Specialist. This included limitations on standing in formation for more than 15 minutes and restrictions on carrying weight or driving.

Kent’s role as a Water Treatment Specialist is crucial, ensuring that clean water is available in areas where it might not be readily accessed. However, following her accident, she described her recovery process as feeling like a ‘diet version’ of her job, highlighting the challenges she faced during her rehabilitation.

Recognizing her struggles, a sergeant directed her to the H2F facility, emphasizing that the program would address her specific needs. The H2F program represents a modern and holistic approach to military physical training, encompassing five domains of health: Physical, Mental, Nutritional, Spiritual, and Sleep. While physical readiness is a component of the program, the focus extends beyond traditional exercise routines.

Reflecting on her experience, Kent stated, “It was life-changing.” Traditional physical therapy was not meeting her needs, but H2F tailored the program to her circumstances, allowing her to engage in water rehabilitation and dry needling. She also participated in modified morning workouts designed for individuals rehabilitating from injuries.

Kent found that the customized approach of H2F was beneficial. Each soldier’s experience is unique, and through her engagement with H2F coaches, she discovered new possibilities without feeling restricted.

Beyond the physical aspects, Kent faced significant mental hurdles due to her injury. She described periods of feeling like her ‘own biggest enemy’ and struggled with the acceptance of her new normal. H2F’s Mental readiness domain provided her with group and individual sessions, and she played a role in piloting an injury-recovery group at Fort Liberty. This opportunity allowed her to connect with others who were facing similar challenges, thus enriching her recovery journey.

Kent employed breathing techniques to manage her emotions during tough times, allowing her to maintain focus. “Being able to calm myself down in the moment and combat unnecessary thoughts has been amazing,” she remarked.

Although initially hesitant, Kent also explored the Spiritual readiness domain, which encourages soldiers to find purpose and connection, especially during difficult times. She acknowledged a crisis of faith related to her injury but found solace in the ready availability of Army chaplains.

Over a year of dedication to the H2F program, Kent made remarkable progress. She recently completed a 5K run—something unimaginable when she struggled to stand for short periods just months earlier. Her future aspirations include hiking the Appalachian Trail with her sister, starting college, and aiming for promotion to sergeant by 2025.

“Utilizing H2F in all aspects of my career has been invaluable,” Kent emphasized, recognizing the comprehensive nature of the program. “I wish more people knew about it; it has influenced every part of my life.”

In addition to her recovery and physical fitness, Kent rediscovered her passion for painting. After completing a mural for her company, she was requested to paint company logos, showcasing the diverse opportunities available within her Army career.

Reflecting on her journey, Kent expressed her commitment to serving in the Army, crediting H2F with helping her explore her passions and reclaim her life. “It gave me my life back,” she said.

Through the holistic support of H2F, Specialist Sydney Kent exemplifies resilience and determination, serving as an inspiring reminder of the strength and motivation found within the Army’s comprehensive health initiatives.
